HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 11, 2019 – High Point University Panther fans came out to cheer on the men’s basketball team on Jan. 9 and received an extra surprise.
HPU President Nido Qubein presented a $245,000 check to the United Way of Greater High Point. The HPU family raised those funds in 2018 to support the UWGHP and its partnering agencies – a 775 percent increase since 2005. This represents a financial investment of $2,334,249 in the High Point community since 2005.
“As an anchor institution in High Point, High Point University is committed to supporting the United Way,” says HPU President Nido Qubein. “I am proud that our city always comes together to support their efforts and the efforts of partner agencies. Together, we are building a stronger community.”
In addition to the annual campaign, students, faculty and staff donate 100,000 hours of service each year to the United Way and other agencies. According to United Way calculations, those volunteer hours are valued at $2.3 million.
“High Point University is once again one of the largest donors to our annual United Way Campaign, but their impact on our community is far greater than just their tremendous financial support,” says Bobby Smith, UWGHP president. “Just within our organization we have four current or former HPU students as either volunteers, staff members or as VISTAs every day. Our Greater High Point Food Alliance would have never reached the scale it has if it wasn’t for dozens of HPU volunteers.”
